Waste Management System for Smart Cities

Updated: Dec 31, 2019

Waste Management is the process of treating solid wastes and offers variety of solutions for recycling items that don’t belong to trash. It is about how garbage can be used as a valuable resource. Waste management is something that each and every household and business owner in the world needs. Waste management disposes of the products and substances that you have use in a safe and efficient manner.

According to Wikipedia,

Waste management or Waste disposal is all the activities and actions required to manage waste from its inception to its final disposal. This includes amongst other things, collection, transport, treatment and disposal of waste together with monitoring and regulation. It also encompasses the legal and regulatory framework that relates to waste management encompassing guidance on recycling etc.

The Conventional method

Conventional way

In the existing system there is no indication whether the dustbin is full or empty. The corporation has to collect the garbage by weekly once or by 2 days once, though the garbage shrinks or overflows the bin and pollutes the environment. This will cause severe consequences. The rain water gets filled in the bin along with the waste which creates a bad smell.

Disadvantages

  • Manual systems in which employees clear the dumpsters periodically.

  • No systematic approach towards clearing the dumpsters.

  • Unclear about the status of a particular location.

  • Employees are unaware of the need for a particular location.

  • Very less effective in cleaning city.

  • Unhygienic environment.

  • Cause illness to human beings.

PROPOSED SYSTEM

IoT Based Waste Management System

  • In this system, a 24*7 monitoring system is designed for monitoring dumpsters

  • Here a smart and organized system is designed for selective clearing

  • Ultrasonic sensor measure distances by using ultrasonic waves. The sensor emits an ultrasonic wave and receives the reflected wave back from the target.

  • DC motor powered platform is used for segregating wet and dry waste

  • IR sensor and moisture sensor is used for separating wet and dry waste

  • If either of the containers is full then an alert message is sent from the dumpster

  • In turn, employees can clear the corresponding dumpster

  • All these sensors are connected to a Microcontroller.

  • Data collected by the microcontroller are transmitted using RF transmitter.

  • RF receiver attached to ruggedBOARD-A5D2x receives the data transmitted by the node (Wirelessly).

  • ruggedBOARD is now ready to process the collected data and display in the local monitor or push the data to cloud server.

  • Municipal corporations can now view real time data on a web browsers or mobile applications.

Conclusion

In the system advocated above, fusion of sensors, identification technology and internet connectivity will lead to a uniquely smart disposal trash bin. Together with the cloud, these trash bins would become irreplaceable element in the waste management cycle where the collection, transportation, storage and recycling of waste could be automated. The use of RFID, IR and IoT technology in waste collection services not only increases efficiency of waste management through automation, but also increases environmental responsibility which is one of the pillars of the Smart City.
